Question:
there are three candidates A,B,and C for an elective office. the odds that A will win are 5 to 3 and the odds that B will win are 1 to 2. what is the probability that C will win.

Solution:
for A: win:lose=5:3 => P(A)=5/(5+3)=5/8
for B: win:lose=1:2 => P(B)=1/(1+2)=1/3
for C:
P(C)=1-(5/8+1/3) [since one of the three will win]
=1-(15+8)/24
=1/24
Probability that C will win is 1/24.
