f(2)=3
f(-4)=0
one puts the x value in the function and goes to the graph and looks at the y-value for that x-value. If the value of f(x) is known (y=3), then one goes to the x-axis where y=3 and that is the value for x in f(x).

if you have 1,2,3,4, on x and y-axis, than
a) the x-value(s) for which f%28x%29=3 is x=2
it's point(2,3)
b) f%28-4%29 means find f%28x%29 when x=-4: it is f%28-4%29=0
it's point(-4,0)
