Question 108271: Please help me solve this problem!
Answer by Annabelle1(69) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Kevin works 3 times as many hours in a week as Karen does. If each were to work 6 h more per week, Kevin would be working twice as many hours as Karen does. How many hours does each work now?
Kevin works x hours
karen works y hours
x=3y
x+6=2(y+6)

x-3y=0
x+6=2y+12
x-2y=6
Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE linear system by SUBSTITUTION
Solve:
+system%28+%0D%0A++++1%5Cx+%2B+-3%5Cy+=+0%2C%0D%0A++++1%5Cx+%2B+-2%5Cy+=+6+%29%0D%0A++We'll use substitution. After moving -3*y to the right, we get:
1%2Ax+=+0+-+-3%2Ay, or x+=+0%2F1+-+-3%2Ay%2F1. Substitute that
into another equation:
1%2A%280%2F1+-+-3%2Ay%2F1%29+%2B+-2%5Cy+=+6 and simplify: So, we know that y=6. Since x+=+0%2F1+-+-3%2Ay%2F1, x=18.

Answer: system%28+x=18%2C+y=6+%29.
