What is the length of the third side of a right triangle if it is known that the two of the sides have lengths 9 and 12. How many solutions does this problem have?What are the possible thirs side lengths
---------
a = 9
b = 12
c = 3rd side
---------
a-b < c < a+b

.
There are two possibilities.

1. The third side, x, is the hypotenuse.

     Then x = sqrt%289%5E2+%2B+12%5E2%29 = sqrt%28215%29 = 15.

2. The third side is the leg.

    In this case 12 is the longest side (the hypotenuse), and the third side length is

    x = sqrt%2812%5E2+-+9%5E2%29 = sqrt%2863%29.
