You can put this solution on YOUR website!
two cars together drive 656 miles in 4 hours or 164 mph combined speed
one car travels x mph
the other is traveling x+6 mph
x+x+6=164
2x+6=164
2x=158
x=79 mph
x+6=85 mph
in 4 hours, one car travels 316 miles and the other 340 miles. That is 656 miles.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You can think of this as one of the cars standing
still and the other one traveling at the sum of their speeds
Let +s+ = the speed of the slower car
+s+%2B+6+ = the speed of the faster car
----------------------------------------
+656+=+%28+s+%2B+s+%2B+6+%29%2A4+
+656+=+%28+2s+%2B+6+%29%2A4+
+656+=+8s+%2B+24+
+8s+=+632+
+s+=+79+
and
+s+%2B+6+=+85+
The speeds of the 2 cars are:
79 mi/hr and 85 mi/hr
------------------------------
check:
+d%5B1%5D+=+79%2A4+
+d%5B1%5D+=+316+ mi
and
+d%5B2%5D+=+85%2A4+
+d%5B2%5D+=+340+ mi
and
+d%5B1%5D+%2B+d%5B2%5D+=+316+%2B+340+
+d%5B1%5D+%2B+d%5B2%5D+=+656+ mi
OK
