You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Joyce had 76 more coins than Ken at first.
After she gave 18 coins to Ken.
She had thrice as many coins as Ken.
How many coins did both of them have altogether at first?
:
let k = no. of coins Ken had originally
then
(k+76) = no. of coins Joyce had
:
(k+76) - 18 = 3(k+18)
k + 58 = 3k + 54
58 - 54 = 3k - k
4 = 2k
k = 2 coins had Ken originally
then
2 + 76 = 78 coins had Joyce
:
"How many coins did both of them have altogether at first?"
2 + 78 = 80 coins
