Bob, Maria, and Shoshana all have birthdays on the same day.
Bobs present age is two years less than the sum of Shoshanas and Maria's present ages.
In five years, Bob will be twice as old as Maria will be then.
Two years ago, Maria was half as old as Shoshana was.
How old is each of them?
--------
Equations:
B = S+M -2
B+5 = 2(M+5)
M-2 = (1/2)(S-2)
-----------------------
Rearrange::
B - S - M = -2
B + 0 -2M = 5
0 + S -2M = -2
---------------------
Substitute for "S" and for "B" and solve for "M"::
2M+5 - (2M-2) - M = -2
--------------------------
-M = -11 (Maria is 11 yrs)
B = 2M+5 = 27 yrs
S = 2M-2 = 20 yrs
--------------------------
