B = S+M -2
B+5 = 2(M+5)
M-2 = (1/2)(S-2)

Rearrange::
B - S - M = -2
B + 0 -2M = 5
0 + S -2M = -2
---------------------
Substitute for "S" and for "B" and solve for "M"::
2M+5 - (2M-2) - M = -2
--------------------------
-M = -11 (Maria is 11 yrs)
B = 2M+5 = 27 yrs
S = 2M-2 = 20 yrs
