Substitute it into (2). You will get

M%2A%2813%2F5%29 - M = 48.

Multiply it by 5 (both sides) to rid of the denominators. You will get

13M - 5M = 5*48,   or

8M = 5*48  ---->  M = %285%2A48%29%2F8 = 5*6 = 30.


Answer.  30 male and 30 + 48 = 78 female.
