Question 1072559: Grandma bought some candy. She gave each of her grandchildren 4 pieces of candy and had 2 pieces left. If she wanted to give each of them 5 pieces of candy, she would be 2 pieces short. How many grandchildren does she have?
I know that the answer is 5 but I can not come up with the right equation. I came up with an equation but it tell me that Grandma has 4 grandchildren -- which is wrong. Thank you.

Let n be that unknown number of grandchildren.


Then the number of cookies C = 4n +2, according to the first part of the condition.


At the same time,  C = 5n - 2, from the other part of the condition.


It gives you an equation


4n + 2 = 5n -2,


which gives you the solution  n = 4.


Answer.  The number of grandchildren is 4.

         The number of cookies is 18.

Solved.
