"feet", is just one direction or one dimension, and this is either a length or a width or a distance.

"square feet", is feet%2Afeet, or feet%5E2, or abbreviated ft%5E2. This is a measure of amount of surface or area.

The wording should be 180 square feet of carpet.
I would write it as 180 ft2

The width and length are "linear" dimensions and
they are expressed as:
width = 9 ft

Let +L+ = the length in feet
+9%2AL+=+180+ ft2
+L+=+20+ ft
So this is a linear dimension just like width.
It never hurts to write down ALL the dimensions involved
in a problem just to keep them straight
