Question 1070058: A steel oil tank is a cylinder with a diameter of 12 feet and a height of 18 feet how many square feet of steel were needed to make the tank ?
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! If the top and bottom are both made of steel (not an open top, for example), the steel needed for the top and bottom is pi*r^2*2=2pi*6^2=72 pi ft^2
The side is 2 pi*r*h, because opening it up, it is a rectangle with height h and length the circumference of a circle, 2*pi*r
That is 2*pi*6*18=216 pi ft^2.
The total area and square feet of steel needed is 288 *pi ft^2.
