7 years ago Somu was 3 times as old as Ram was at that time.
s - 7 = 3(r-7)
s - 7 = 3r - 21
s = 3r - 21 + 7
s = 3r - 14
:
If Somu is now 5 years older than Ram,
s = r + 5
replace s with (r+5) in the first simplified equation
(r+5) = 3r - 14
5 + 14 = 3r - r
19 = 2r
r = 19/2
r = 9.5 yrs old
then "how old is Somu?"
s = 9.5 + 5
s = 14.5 yrs old
