Question 1066965: f(x) = log2 x
I am just starting out on logarithms and I'm having trouble understanding how to solve. this isn't for homework its just some "on my own time" studying. the example problem gives te equation above and the following coordinates in a table:
2,1
4,2
8,3
16,4

You can put this solution on YOUR website! You have to be able to "read" the expression for a log.

The left side says:
[ the right side of this equation is a function of ]
-------------------------------
The 1st thing on the right side says:
[ I am a log ]
What's a log?
A log is an exponent where the base is known
So the right side is a log
What does ( 2,x ) mean?
It means:
[ the base is 2 ]
[ when 2 is raised to an exponent, the result is ]
-----------------------------------------------------
If I say , then I can restate all this as:

-------------------
Now I write it the inverse way:

given:
( x,y ) = ( 2,1 )

Read this as:
is the exponent and the base is
When is raised to the exponent ,
that gives me
Or,
-------------------------------------------
( 4,2 )

is the exponent and the base is
When is raised to the exponent
that gives me

--------------------------
( 8,3 )

is the exponent and the base is
When is raised to the exponent
that gives me

---------------------------
( 16,4 )
is the exponent and the base is
When is raised to the exponent
that gives me

---------------------------
Hope this helps. Practice reading log expressions.
