Vivienne made cupcakes to share with her friends and teachers at school.
She gives half of her cupcakes to her friends.
Then, she gives 2 cupcakes to her teacher.
Finally, she gives 25% of the remaining cupcakes to her principal.
She now has 12 cupcakes left. How many cupcakes did she bring to school?
:
let x = original number of cupcakes
:
x = .5x + 2 + .25(x - (.5x+2)) + 12
x = .5x + 2 + .25(x - .5x - 2) + 12
x = .5x + 2 + .25(.5x - 2) + 12
x = .5x + 2 + .125x - .5 + 12
x = .5x + .125x + 2 - .5 + 12
x = .625x + 13.5
x - .625x = 13.25
.375x = 13.25
x = 36 cupcakes she brought to school

Let number of cupcakes she made, be C
After giving 1%2F2 to friends, she had 1%2F2 left
After giving 2 to the teacher, she had: %281%2F2%29C+-+2, or C%2F2+-+2
After giving 25% of remainder to principal, she had: matrix%281%2C3%2C+.75+%2A+%28C%2F2+-+2%29%2C+or%2C+.75C%2F2+-+1.5%29 left
We then get: .75C%2F2+-+1.5+=+12
.75C - 3 = 24 ------- Multiplying by LCD, 2
.75C = 24 + 3
.75C = 27
C, or number of cupcakes she made was: highlight_green%28matrix%281%2C3%2C+27%2F.75%2C+or%2C+36%29%29
