My 5th grader took 36-11=25-11=14-11=3* 4= 12
The answer was 20 but not sure how to figure it out.

25 black or brown unmatched socks as he correctly started with. We are left with black and brown.
let brown=x
black are 4x
4x+x=5x
5x=25
x=5
4x=20 which are black.
