You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Alec has ten dollars more than Bill. The sum of one-third of Alec's money and one-quarter of Bill's money is $67.50. How much has each boy?
--------------------
a = b + 10
(1/3)a + (1/4)b = 67.5
-------------------------------------
Substitute for "a" and solve for "b"::
(1/3)(b+10) + (1/4)b = 67.5
Multiply thru by 12 to get::
4(b+10) + 3b = 12*67.5
4b + 40 + 3b = 810
7b = 770
b = $110
---
a = b + 10 = $120.00
----------------
