You can put this solution on YOUR website! Kelly has 12$ in dimes and quarters. She has 6 more quarters than dimes. How many dimes does Kelly have?
--------------------
Value:: 10d + 25q = 1200 cents
Quantity: q = d+6
-----------------------------
Modify for elimination:
2d + 5q = 240
5d - 5q = -30
-----------------------
7d = 210
Ans:: # of dimes = 30

Kelly has 12$ in dimes and quarters. She has 6 more quarters than dimes. How many dimes does Kelly have?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can solve the problem without using equations.
For it, take 6 quarters from the collection for a moment (mentally, of course).
Then the collection will have $10.50, and the number of quarters will be the same as the number of dimes.
If so, you can group the remaining coins in sets containing 1 quarters and 1 dime each.
Each set worth is 25 + 10 = 35 cents.
To get the number of sets, divide $10.50 by 35 cents. You will get 30 sets.
So, the number of dimes is 30.
Solved.
Do not forget to return 6 quarters to the collection (mentally, of course).
