You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Adult tickets for a play cost $18 and child tickets cost $2. If there were 20 people at a performance and the theater collected $88 from ticket sales, how many children attended the play?

Lex x: number of children who attended the play
20-x: number of adults who attended the play
Adult tickets: $18
Child tickets: $2

Equation:
2x + 18(20-x) = 88

Solution:
2x + 360 - 18x = 88
-16x + 360 = 88
-16x = 88 - 360
-16x = -272

Divide both sides by -16.

Answer:
x = -272/-16
x = 17
17 children attended the play.

Check:
2(17) + 18(20-17) = 88
2(17) + 18(3) = 88
34 + 54 = 88
88 = 88 (true)

Answer: 17 children
