You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a newsletter printing job needs to be done each week. using an older copy machine the job took 2.5 hours to complete.
time = 2.5 hr/job ; rate = 1/2.5 job/hr
-----------------------------------------------------
then a new machine was brought in and using both machines, the job could be completed in 1 hour. how long would it take the new machine to do the job alone
New machine DATA:
time = x hrs/job ; rate = 1/x job/hr
------------------
Together DATA:
time = 1 hr/job ; rate = 1 job/hr
------------------------------------------
Equation:
rate + rate = together rate
1/2.5 + 1/x = 1
---------------
x + 2.5 = 2.5x
-----
1.5x = 2.5
---
x = 5/3 hr = 1 2/3 hr = 1 hr 40 min (time for 2nd machine to do the job alone)
----------------
