L - 2 = S + 10
L = S + 10 + 2
L = S + 12
the sum of their ages is 14
L + S = 14
replace L with (S+12) from the first equation
(S+12) + S = 14
2S = 14 - 12
2S = 2
S = 1 yr is Sally's age
then
L = 1 + 12
L = 13 yrs is Larry's age
