q+d = 55 subtract d on both sides:
q = 55-d

0.25q+0.10d = 8.50 substitute for q:
0.25(55-d)+0.10d = 8.50
13.75-0.25d+0.10d = 8.50 add/subtract d on left and subtract 13.75 on both sides:
-0.15d = -5.25 divide both sides by 0.15 and remember -/- = +
d = 35 you have 35 dimes and
(55-35 = 20) 20 quarters
