Write an explanation confirming that running "10 yards out, then 10 yards to the right" puts you in the same place as going "10 , yards at a 45-degree angle." Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! 10 yards out and 10 yards to the right forms a right triangles with each leg being 10 yards in length.
a right triangle with legs of equal length is a 45 degree right triangle.
the hypotenuse of such a right triangle would be equal to sqrt(10^2 + 10^2) which is equal to sqrt(100 + 100) which is equal to sqrt(200) which is equal to sqrt(2*100) which is equal to sqrt(2)*sqrt(100) which is equal to sqrt(2)*10 which is equal to 10*sqrt(2).
if you travel along the legs of this right triangle, you are traveling a total distance of 20 years.
if you travel along the hypotenuse of this right triangle, you are traveling a total distance of 10 * sqrt(2) yards.
