Question 1058020: I'm building a corner cabinet. 2 sides are 18 inches long forming a 90 degree angle in the corner. How long will the third side or front of the cabinet be; and what would be the depth of the cabinet that I assume would be the height of the triangle? If it is an easy formula I wish to learn it for future reference. If it takes a mathematician I prefer just an answer even if it is a good approximation. Thanks, DB

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If I understand this right, you have a right triangle
and the legs forming the right angle are +18+ in
-------------------
If +c+ is the 3rd side, the front of the cabinet, then
the formula is:
+c%5E2+=+18%5E2+%2B+18%5E2+
+c%5E2+=+2%2A%28+18%5E2+%29+
+c%5E2+=+2%2A324+
+c%5E2+=+648+
+c+=+25.4558+
Now take half of this
( where the height of the triangle hits side c )
+25.4558%2F2+=+12.7279+
---------------------------
The height would be:
+h%5E2+=+18%5E2+-+12.7279%5E2+
+h%5E2+=+324+-+161.9994+
+h%5E2+=+162+
+h+=+12.728+
The depth of the cabinet is 12.728 in
----------------------------------
You can verify by laying out the measurements
on paper or any flat surface, then taking
measurement of the depth
Hope this helps
