let x=dimes, so x+12=nickels and 50-(2x+12)=quarters ... working in cents avoids problems with decimal points

10(x)+5(x+12)+25(38-2x)=520 ... 10x+5x+60+950-50x=520 ... -35x=-490 ... x=14

x+12=26

50-(2x+12)=10
