Devyn has 108 coins in nickels and quarters worth $12.60. Write and solve an equation to determine how many of each coin she has.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let "n" be the number of nickels.
Then the number of quarters is (108-n).
Nickels contribute 5n cents into the total.
Quarters contribute 25*(108-n) cents into the total.
The "value" equation is
5n + 25(108-n) = 1260.
Simplify and solve for n:
5n + 2700 - 25n = 1260,  or
-20n = 1260 - 2700,
-20n = -1440  --->  n = %28-1440%29%2F%28-20%29 = 72.
Answer. The number of nickels is 72.
        The number of quarters is 108-72 = 36.
