Question 1054444: A boat's crew rowed 12 miles downstream, with the current, in 1.5 hours. The return trip upstream, against the current, covered the same distance, but took 4 hours. Find the crew's rowing rate in still water and the rate of the current.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! flat water speed=x
x+c=8 mph, because the distance 12 miles divided by the time, 1.5 hours, is 8 mph
x-c=3 mph, because 12 miles/4 hours is 3 mph
add them
2x=11mph
x=5.5 mph flat water speed
c=2.5 mph, current.
