Question 1052530: Dr. Nelms rode his mule, Go Chuck, for the first 35 miles of a trip at a constant rate. Then for the next 22 miles, Dr. Nelms reduced speed by 4 mph since Go Chuck was getting tired. The total time for the trip was 2 hours. Find the rate at which Dr. Nelms and Go Chuck were traveling on each leg of the trip. Answer by jorel555(1290) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let r be the rate at which Dr. Nelms rode on the second leg. Then the first leg's rate would be r+4. So:
35/(r+4)+22/r=2
35r+22(r+4)=2rē+8r
2rē-49r-88=0
r=26.18 or -1.68
Throwing out the negative result, we get the first part of the trip traveled at 30.18 mph, and the second at 26.18. ☺☺☺☺
