You can put this solution on YOUR website! Say the same thing using variables and equations.
t, Tommy
L, Linda
j, Julie
Make the easy substitutions for j and L INTO the age-summation equation, and first solve for t. Not the only way to go, but it is the easiest for this example.

if tommy julie and linda's age all together is 64 and julie is twice as old as tommy and linda is 4 years older than tommy how old is each person
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let T be Tommy's age.
Then Julie is 2T years old,
and Linda is T + 4 years old.
The sum of their ages is
T + 2T + (T+4) = 64.
One equation for one unknown.
That is all they want from you.
Forget about three equations and three variables.
Focus on writing one equation in one unknown.
Now simplify and solve the equation:
4T = 60.
---> T = 15. Tommy is 15 years old.
Then Julie is 2*15 = 30 and Linda is 15+4 = 19.
Check. 15 + 30 + 19 = 64.
Answer. Tommy is 15, Linda is 19, Julie is 30 years old.
