8x - 12y = 14

Divide through by 2:

4x - 6y = 7

4x and 6y are both divisible by 2.
The sum, difference, and product of any 
two even numbers is always even.

Therefore it is impossible to subtract
an even number 6y from another even
number 4x and get the odd number 7.
