Question 1049723: Ref. Questions 1049479, 1049528:
A hexagonal steel bar is 1" in diameter across the flats, and 1' in length.
Determine weight of bar.
Steel weighs .283 lbs. / cu. in.
Unsure how to solve.
Non-homework question.
Thanks.
Regular Hexagon:
d = distance across flats.
b = hexagon side.
d = sq. rt. 3b = 1.7321b.
My attempt:
1 * 1.7321 = 1.7321
= 1.7321 * 12 = 20.78 = 21 cu. in.
= 21 * .283 = 5.943 lbs.
Where am I correct? Answer by Alan3354(69443) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! A hexagonal steel bar is 1" in diameter across the flats, and 1' in length.
Determine weight of bar.
Steel weighs .283 lbs. / cu. in.
----------
1" across the flats --> 0.5" apothem = r
Cross-sectional area = nr^2*tan(180/n) where n = # of sides
Area = 6*0.25*tan(30) =~ 0.866 sq inches
Vol = 0.866*12 cubic inches = 10.392 cubic inches
Mass = 10.392*0.283 = 2.941 pounds
