Question 104857: Compare the population per square mile in Asia to the population per square mile in North America in the year 2000.
(Asia) 4,028,000,000 pop. sq. mi. 17,400
(North America) 305,000,000 sq. mi. 9,400
Do I divide the population by the square miles to begin with or am I off base here?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You are right on!
Think of the "per" as "divided by", so:
Population "per" square mile is population "divided by" square miles.
For Asia, you get:
4,028,000,000/17,400 = 231,494 people per square mile.( Rounded to nearest integer, since you normally don't have fractions of people)
For North America:
305,000,000/9,400 = 32,447 people per square mile.
I'll leave the comparison to you!
