Seven times a number minus twelve is the same as two times the number plus thirty
Substitute x for the words "a number" and "the number"

Seven times x minus twelve is the same as two times x plus thirty
Substitute a equal sign for the words "is the same as"

Seven times x minus twelve = two times x plus thirty
Substitute 7x for the words "Seven times x"

7x minus twelve = two times x plus thirty
Substitute 2x for the words "two times x"

7x minus twelve = 2x plus thirty
Substitute - 12 for the words "minus twelve"

7x - 12 = 2x plus thirty
Substitute + 30 for the words "plus thirty"

7x - 12 = 2x + 30
Subtract 2x from both sides

5x - 12 = 30

Add 12 to both sides

5x = 42

Divide both sides by 5

x = 42/5
