Question 1047318: A 1/2" diameter brass rod is used in producing 500 slotted screws 1 5/8" in length, 1/2" diameter, with 1/8" allowance for cutting off and finishing each screw. Determine weight of rod.
Brass weighs .311 lbs. per cu. in.
My attempt:
500 * .5 * 1.63 * .13 = 52.975 = 53 in.
The rod is cylindrical. Volume: pi * r^2 * length (or height).
3.1416 * .25 * .25 * 53 = 10.40 cu. in.
10.40 * .311 = 3.23 lbs.
Where am I correct ?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The way I read it:
each screw is 1 5/8" long + 1/8" for finishing, so in raw form the bar stock for each screw is 1 5/8+1/8 = 1 6/8 = 1 3/4 = 1.75
And we have 500 screws:
500*1.75 = 875 inches long.
Diameter: 1/2 = radius 1/4 or 0.25
Volume: Pi*0.25^2*875 = 171.81 in^3
Weight:
171.81*.311 = 53.43 lbs is the weight of the rod
