Apply the quadratic formula.

There is nothing that says that the number is a positive integer,
but if that had been meant,the fifth grader approach would work well.
Otherwise, we could use the algebra approach.

THE FIFTH GRADER APPROACH:
It cannot be a very small number, like 1 ,
because the sum would be too low.
It cannot be 7 or more,
because the sum would be more than 7=14%2F2%3E13%2F2 .
It must be a multiple of 2 ,
because the sum has a 2 in the denominator.
Could the number be 4 ?
Its reciprocal is 1%2F4 , and the sum i
4%2B3%281%2F4%29=4%2B3%2F4=16%2F4%2B3%2F4=19%2F4 .
That is not 13%2F2=26%2F4 .
The sum is less than 13%2F2 ,
and obviously the bigger the starting number,
the larger the sum will be,
so let's try 6 .
The reciprocal of 6 is 11%2F6 ,
and the sum of 6 plus thrice its reciprocal is
