| Question 1043119: A plane flies from New York City to Las Vegas. It has a 50 minute layover in St. Louis. The plane takes off in NYC at 9 a.m. and lands in Las Vegas at 1:35 p.m.
How long was the plane actually flying?

I know that NYC is Eastern Standard time and St. Louis is Central Standard time, 1 hour earlier. I know that Las Vegas is in Pacific time which is 3 hours earlier than in NYC.
I think the answer is around 5 hours, just reasoning it out. Can you help me put numbers to it?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! You are right that we need to work with a single time zone. 9AM in NY is Eastern time.
1:35PM in Las Vegas is Pacific time.
So our trip starts at 6AM Pacific Time and finishes at 1:35PM Pacific time.
The total time of our trip is 7 hours and 35 minutes,
 6 hours from 6AM to 12AM, 1 hour and 35 minutes from 12AM to 1:35PM
The amount of time actually flying is
 ( 7 hours 35 minutes ) - ( 50 minutes , the time of the layover )
 7 hours 35 minutes - 50 minutes
 or
 ( 6 hours + 1 hour + 35 minutes ) - ( 50 minutes )
convert the 1 hour to 60 minutes
 ( 6 hours + 60 minutes + 35 minutes ) - ( 50 minutes )
 ( 6 hours + 95 minutes ) - ( 50 minutes )
 ( 6 hours ) + (95 minutes ) - ( 50 minutes )
 6 hours 45 minutes
