Question 104256: How many cubed pieces of fudge that are 3 inches on an edge can be packed into a Christmas tin that is 9 inches deep by 12 inches wide by 8 inches high with the lid still being able to be closed?
Answer by Fombitz(32388) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! That's a big piece of fudge.
Since the depth and witdth are multiples of 3(9,12) you can fit fudge in 3 pieces deep (3x3=9) and you can fit 4 pieces wide (4x3=12).
A tin that had a height of 9 inches would be perfect but you only have 8 inches of height and you need to be able to close the lid.
You have to go down to the next highest multiple of 3 inches that is less than 8 inches, that is 6 inches.
In that case you can stack them 2 pieces high (2x3=6).
You will have 2 inches of height as open air.
So you can fit 3 pieces deep, 4 pieces wide, and 2 pieces high or 3x4x2 pieces of fudge.
24 pieces.
