You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The length and the width of a rectangular floor a m and b m.
Solve for a and b, given the following
information:
• If the length and the width each increases with 1 m, the area will increase with 9 m2
(a+1)*(b+1) = ab + 9
FOIL
ab + a + b + 1 = ab + 9
subtract ab from both sides
a + b + 1 = 9
a + b = 9 -1
a + b = 8
solve for a
a = -b + 8
solve for b
b = -a + 8
.
• If the length decreases with 0.5 m and the width increases with 4 m, the area is doubled
(a-.5)*(b+4) = 2ab
ab + 4a - .5b -2 = 2ab
solve for a
ab - 2ab + 4a = .5b + 2
-ab + 4a = .5b + 2
factor out a
a(-b + 4) = .5b + 2
a = %28%28.5b%2B2%29%29%2F%28%28-b%2B4%29%29
solve for b
-ab + 4a = .5b + 2 =
-ab - .5b = -4a + 2
get rid of all those negatives, multiply by -1
ab + .5b = 4a - 2
Factor out b
b(a+.5) = 4a - 2
b = %28%284a-2%29%29%2F%28%28a%2B.5%29%29
