You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Lewiston and Vernonvile are 112 miles apart. a car leaves lewiston traveling towards Vernonvile, and another car leaves Vernonvile at the same time, traveling towards Lewiston.
The car leaving Lewiston averages 10 milles per hour more than the other, and they meet after 1 hour and 36 minitues.
What are the average speeds of the cars.
:
let s = the speed of the slower car
then
(s+10) = the speed of the faster
:
Change 36 min to hrs. 36/60 = .6 hrs
:
When they meet the sum of their distances will be 112 mi
Write a distance equation; dist = time * speed
1.6s + 1.6(s+10) = 112
1.6s + 1.6s + 16 = 112
3.2s = 112 - 16
3.2s = 96
s = 96/3.2
s = 30 mph is the speed of the slower car
then
30 + 10 = 40 mph is the speed of the faster
:
;
Check this by finding the actual dist each traveled
1.6 * 30 = 48 mi
1.6 * 40 = 64 mi
-----------------
total dist: 112 mi
