You can put this solution on YOUR website!
hypotenuse, same as the ladder, h
leg on the wall, h-6
leg on the ground, h-3

Pythagorean Theorem Relationship because Right Triangle: h%5E2=%28h-6%29%5E2%2B%28h-3%29%5E2

h%5E2=h%5E2-12h%2B36%2Bh%5E2-6h%2B9
0=h%5E2-18h%2B45
%28h-15%29%28h-3%29=0
One root makes sense and the other root makes no sense.

Let height up the wall that the ladder rests, be H
Then height of ladder (hypotenuse of right triangle formed) = H + 3, and distance from bottom of ladder to base of building = H + 3 - 6, or H - 3
We then get: H%5E2+%2B+%28H+-+3%29%5E2+=+%28H+%2B+3%29%5E2
H%5E2+%2B+H%5E2+-+6H+%2B+9+=+H%5E2+%2B+6H+%2B+9
H%5E2+%2B+H%5E2+-+H%5E2+-+6H+-+6H+%2B+9+-+9+=+0
H%5E2+-+12H+=+0
H(H - 12) = 0
H - 12 = 0 OR H = 0 (ignore)
H, or height up the wall that the ladder rests = highlight_green%28matrix%281%2C2%2C+12%2C+feet%29%29
