Question 1040018: At the .01 significance level is there a difference in the mean amount purchased on an impulse at the two stores? Explain these results to a person who knows about the t test for a single sample but is unfamiliar with the t test for independent means.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! What the t-test was done for is not stated, but one can look at the difference of means as two bags with a bunch of random numbers in them. You draw a sample from each and compare the means, using a t-test. If the significance level is 0.01, that says that if the means were truly the same in both bags there is a 1% chance you would have obtained the result you did. By convention (and decree years ago in an off the cuff statement), we consider 5% significant, but any value may be significant so long as it is defined before the test is done. More information regarding the two stores would allow a better answer.
