Question 1040014: 1. A 25 N object requires a 5.0 N to start moving over a horizontal surface. What is the coefficient of static friction?

2.A 12 N cart is moving on a horizontal surface with a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.20. What force of friction must be overcome to keep the object moving at a constant velocity?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Physics problem; Algebra website. Sort of like trying to buy a pound of 10d nails at the grocery store.

My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it

1. A 25 N object requires a 5.0 N to start moving over a horizontal surface. What is the coefficient of static friction?

k%5Bfriction%5D = F%5Bshift%5D%2FF%5Bnormal%5D

Coefficient of friction is the ratio of the magnitude (modulus) of the shifting force F%5Bshift%5D applied to the body
and directed along the surface to the magnitude (modulus) of the normal force F%5Bn%5D directed normal to the surface (see this Wikipedia article).

I our case, k%5Bfriction%5D = 5%2F25 = 0.2.

2. A 12 N cart is moving on a horizontal surface with a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.20. What force of friction
must be overcome to keep the object moving at a constant velocity?

F%5Bfriction%5D = k%5Bfriction%5D%2AF%5Bn%5D = 0.2*12 = 2.4 N.
