Marcus drives to school at an average speed of 24 miles per hour and returns home along the same route at an average speed of 40 miles per hour. If his total travel time is 4 hours, what is the total number of miles in the round trip to and from school?
-----------
Avg speed of the round trip = 2*24*40/(24+40) = 30 mi/hr
-----
4 hr * 30 mi/hr = 120 miles RT
--------
A long commute. He should find a different school.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
n miles/24 mph+n miles/40 mph=4 hours
5n+3n=480
8n=480
n=60 miles both ways, or 120 miles round-trip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
