Question 1036423: Hi
a cylindrical tank is constructed in concrete with circular base of diameter 5.4 m.a plastic lid will be placed later.
the concrete base is 200mm thick
the walls are 150mm thick
What is the water tanks capacity and what is the volume of concrete required to make it.
could u please show workings out
thank u

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
We know that once we have the base and the wall, we have a smaller cylinder.
Our base will be a circle with a diameter that is .15 meters shorter. The number .15 is calculated by converting millimeter to meter.
Therefore our circular base will have a diameter of 5.4 - .15 = 5.25 meters
The height will be also shorter due to concrete. The new height is 2.16 - .2
We go .2 by converting the millimeter to meter
Therefore shorter height is 2.16 - .2 = 1.96 meters
Now the volume of this smaller cylinder is pi*r^2*height
We know that the diameter is 5.25. The radius is half of this number which is 2.625
Volume = pi*2.625^2*1.96 The number of pi is around 3.14

1. You forgot to include the tank height into your input.

2. The solution of the other tutor is wrong.

-------------------------------
comment from student: Sorry for my oversight. The tank height is 2.16 m.
-------------------------------

My responce
The internal radius of the cylindrical tank (of the hollow) is 5.4%2F2+-+0.15 = 2.7 - 0.15 = 2.55 m.

The height of the internal cylindrical hollow is 2.16 - 0.2 = 1.96 m.

The capacity of the tank is pi%2Ar%5E2%2Ah = 3.14%2A2.55%5E2%2A1.96 m%5E3.

The volume of concrete is

pi%2A2.7%5E2%2A0.2 + pi%2A%282.7%5E2+-+2.55%5E2%29%2A1.96 m%5E3.

You make the calculations.
