.
a round trip in a helicopter lasted 4 hours 30 minutes. if the helicopter flew away from the airport at 100 miles per hour
and returned at the rate of 50 miles per hour, what was its greatest distance from the airport?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your equation is
D%2F100 + D%2F50 = 4.5    (4.5 = 4 hour and 30 minutes in hours)
Solve the equation for D. For it, multiply both sides for 100, as the first step. You will get
D + 2D = 450,
3D = 450,
D = 150 miles.
It is 1.5 hour at the speed of 100 mph and 3 hours at the speed of 50 mph.
