number 1 is the original exp4ression.
numbers 2 through 4 take each term in the multiplicand and multiply it by each term in the multiplier.
the multiplier is 1/2 * a^3.
the multiplicand is (4a - 6b + 8ab^4).
each term in the multipicad is .....
4a
-6b
8ab^4
number 5 adds all the terms that were multiplied by the multiplier to form the new expression.
the new expression looks like your second selection.
