No worries...let's call the costs of apples and oranges, x and y.
Then we write
7x + y = 98 and
2x + 3y = 66
Now let's multiply the top equation by 3 and subtract it from the bottom one...we get
2x + 3y = 66
-(21x + 3y = 294)
-----------------
-19x = -228
Now divide by -19 and get
x = 12 (apples are 12 cents each)
Now plug that in to the first equation and get
7(12) + y = 98
84 + y = 98
y = 14 cents
So an apple and an orange would cost 12 + 14 = 26 cents...how's that?
