Question 1032482: A large pizza at a pizzeria is a circle with a diameter of 14 inches. Its box is a rectangular prism that is 14 1/8 inches long, 14 1/8 wide and 1 3/4 tall. Your job is to create a new shape for the large pizza
It can be any irregular polygon shape BUT
It must have at least 5 sides
Fit inside the large box listed above
And be cut into 8-12 equal slices.

Please help!
I know the area of the circle is 153.94inches
And the area of the rectangular prism is 496.91 inches
Now I was looking to use a 6 sided object but I have no idea what I am doing. Can someone please help me?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A hexagon is a good choice for a problem like this.
If you draw a regular hexagon, you will see that the distance across it must be the same 14 1/8" to clear the 14" pizza...that distance must be side to side not vertex to vertex...
That 14 1/8" distance is the length of two apothems.
Thus the apothem is 7 1/16".
We can find the side of the hexagonal box by realizing that a hexagon is really just six equilateral triangles in one figure.
We have to multiply the apothem by 2%2Fsqrt%283%29.
We get
Side length = 7.0625+%2A+%282%2Fsqrt%283%29%29+=+8.155 inches
The area of said hexagon would be
A+=+%281%2F2%29ap+=+%281%2F2%29%287.0625%29%286%2A8.155%29 =
172.8 square inches, certainly large enough for the pizza...
