Question 1031059: A truck driver can drive no more than 8 hours in one day. He has already
driven 3.5 hours. He drives at an average rate of 55 miles per hour.
Which inequality could be used to find the distance, d, the truck driver
can travel in the remaining time?
A. d ÷ 55 + 3.5 ≤ 8
B. 55d + 3.5 ≤ 8
C. d ÷ 55 − 3.5 ≤ 8
D. 55d − 3.5 ≤ 8

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The remaining time is 4.5 hours. The driver has a rate of 55 mph, so the distance is less than or equal to 55*4.5=247.5 miles. It might be less than that if d is less.
a above shows that
247.5/55=4.5+3.5 must be less than or equal to 8.
the one that should be excluded is c, but there 4.5-3.5 is less than or equal to 8, and that would never be close to 8, whereas in 8, if the driver continues at this rate, it will be exactly 8.
