Call the ages of John and Jude, j and d. Then we write
j = 5 + 6d and
j + d = 33
Now substitute the first one into the second...we get
(5+6d) + d = 33
5 + 7d = 33
7d = 28
d = 4 (Jude)
which means
j = 29 (John)
