Question 103066: gwen and jean have an argument before a bike ride. so they leave riding in opposite directions. riding on a huffy jean rides 10 mph faster than gwen. after riding 6 hours they are 180 miles apart. at what speed was gwen riding? I need help setting up the equation. would it be 180r+6(r+10)=180?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
gwen and jean have an argument before a bike ride. so they leave riding in opposite directions. riding on a huffy jean rides 10 mph faster than gwen. after riding 6 hours they are 180 miles apart. at what speed was gwen riding?
----------------
Gwen DATA:
Time = 6 hrs ; Rate = x mph ; Distance = rt = 6x miles
-------------------
Jean DATA:
Time = 6 hrs : Rate = x+10 mph; Distance = rt = 6(x+10)
-------------------
EQUATION:
distance + distance = 180 miles
6x + 6(x+10)= 180
12x + 60 = 180
12x = 120
x = 10 mph (Gwen's rate)
